What Mommy Read: Little Bee

Little BeeLittle Bee by Chris Cleave

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

“Little Bee” was definitely out of my literary comfort zone, but I thought it was an excellent book. (read for Book Club)
I felt more connected to the parts told in Little Bee’s voice than those in Sarah’s. Little Bee just felt so much more “real” to me. And I am still amazed at how well Cleve (a white man) was able to tell the story from Little Bee’s point of view (a black female). Great writing. It was a very touching story. And so very heartbreaking.
My favorite quote: “We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, ‘I survived’.”

My one word 2013

I always make a list of resolutions for the New Year.  And I stick to them…. for about 2-3 weeks. Exercising & eating healthy, organizing & decluttering, creating a family budget… but by the end of January I’m eating a Whopper Jr & fries while shopping online and avoiding the stack of junk mail, catalogs, magazines, and bills that are piled on the kitchen counter.

This year is different. I am not making resolutions for 2013. Instead, I am choosing a one word theme that encompasses what I want to achieve and how I want to live during the next 12 months.  My one word is:

1flour·ish

verb \ˈflər-ish, ˈflə-rish\

Definition of FLOURISH

  1. to be in a vigorous state; thrive.
  2. to be in its or in one’s prime; be at the height of fame, excellence, influence, etc.
  3. to be successful; prosper.
  4. to grow luxuriantly, or thrive in growth, as a plant.

What is your one word for 2013?

Outdoor Enchantment – Pinterest Party

During the month of April I participated in a “party” with The DIY Club called Project Pinterest. The monthly theme was Outdoor Enchantment. It was fairly simple….I created my Pinterest board with their specified title – “Outdoor Enchantment with the DIY Club” and pinned anything that I loved that was outdoor related. I pinned outdoor dining tablescapes, flower container & gardening  ideas, outdoor activities for children & families, and more.

The cool part…. my board was one that The DIY Club featured at the end of the “party”. Here is the lovely outdoor dining tablescape pin that was featured. I would love to have lunch with my favorite girlfriends at this table!

But the coolest part… this theme definitely inspired and motivated me for spring/summer outdoor decorating, gardening, and fun!  Excited to play kick croquet with our kids….Making plant labels for my herbs out of wine corks….Planting beautiful flower containers….

Check out all of my pins on my “Outdoor Enchantment at The DIY Club” board. And if you feel compelled to let me know which pin was your favorite, I’d {LOVE} to read your comments.

xo,

Nicole

“Big girl” bedroom inspiration and the perfect {vintage} find

I am slowly but surely acquiring items to transform Harper’s bedroom from a minimally-decorated, pale pink and chocolate brown nursery to a  whimsical “big girl” room full of personality and charm with a vintage/shabby chic feel.

I had colors in mind….hot pink, light pink, soft lime, and aqua or turquoise. But I needed a visual. Gotta love Pinterest….found this fabulous color palette from The Inspired Bride.

I had decided on a solid color quilt with pattern/print pillows. But, I found this quilt at TJMaxx…fell in love with it… and decided to flip my design. Pictured with…turquoise and lime Ralph Lauren throw pillows (also from TJMaxx),  her one-year-old cake smash photo (photo by Kenzi Photography) in a 16×20 Mary Ann frame in dragonfruit from The Organic Bloom, and striped bicycle pillow.

The one thing that I definitely wanted her to have…. a vintage white iron bed frame. I have kept my eye out for one since she was born. I had almost given up hope and started talking myself into a reproduction. But….my fabulous mother came across one in a furniture resale shop this weekend and sent this photo via text.

Of course, I rushed right out to buy it….even though it won’t go into Harper’s bedroom for a few weeks. I will happily store it in the garage until after I paint and buy a twin mattress.

Now, I just need to buy paint…paint the room….buy a chandelier….paint our birdcage….order wall art….and put it all together. Check back for a post of her new bedroom in a few weeks. Until then, take a peak at the photos that have given me ideas and inspiration on my Harper’s “Big Girl” bedroom board on Pinterest.

xo,

Nicole

#Marchphotoaday – Day 20 {before/after} aka Wedding canvas

I have discovered my new love…canvas prints. I have ordered 3 from Canvas on Demand. My most recent was a 20×32 inch canvas of one of our favorite wedding photos. (our wedding was in Oct 2008)

I was thrilled with the quality of the canvas. Unfortunately the photos from my outdated point and shoot camera don’t do it justice.

We love how it looks hanging over the fireplace in our family room.

Do you prefer framed prints or canvas? Do you opt for large photos or do you stick to 5×7 and 8×10 photos?

DIY {skateboard} shelving

When we started decorating my teenage son’s bedroom, I looked to Pinterest and Pottery Barn Teen for inspiration. He didn’t want a “theme” bedroom.  We just wanted to incorporate his personality and interests.  When I saw this photo pinned from PBteen, I knew it was almost perfect for his bedroom.

We liked the PBteen skateboard shelves, but they seemed to be missing something…. trucks and wheels and colorful designs. So, I decided to create our own spin on skateboard shelving.

Materials I used per shelf:
* a skateboard (on sale at K-Mart)
* 2 “L” brackets (from a local hardware store)
* screws (from a local hardware store)

How-To:
* Screw each of the “L” brackets into the bottom of the skateboard just inside of the trucks.
* Locate studs in the wall.
* Screw the “L” brackets into the wall.

DONE!  Interesting, simple, and inexpensive (we made 2 shelves and ordered a pizza for the same price as one shelf from PBteen) shelving for him to display his artwork, pinewood derby cars, favorite Xbox games, hats, etc.

#Marchphotoaday Day 10 & Day 13

I am having trouble completing the #Marchphotoaday challenge every single day. Most days I don’t remember the daily topic until I’m laying in bed at night. But,  did remember to take photos for the challenge on Day 10 and Day 13.

Harper loves to let out an ear-splitting, high-pitched scream in mommy’s minivan, especially when stopped at red lights. Almost makes me want to run the lights. Almost.

These signs are posted at the indoor water park we visited for our mini spring break family getaway. Not sure why the pool hours are posted as 9am-3pm when it didn’t actually close until 9pm.
