What We’re Reading Wednesday – Little Owl’s Night

My children and I LOVE books. We enjoy discovering new characters and stories. So, I’m going to start a weekly post featuring one of our favorite reads from the week.

little owl's night book

Last night, we read an amazing bedtime book that Harper received for Christmas. “Little Owl’s Night” by Divya Srinivasan is a wonderful story about nighttime. Unlike so many other Children’s books about the night, the focus is not on going to sleep. Rather, Little Owl shares the wonders of the nocturnal world.

“Little Owl’s Night” is beautifully illustrated. All of the woodland animals are delightful in their after-dark settings. My children loved the illustrations so much that we downloaded desktop wallpaper from http://www.pupae.com/littleowlsnight/funstuff.html

We hope you enjoy “Little Owl’s Night” as much as we do!

Order from: Barnes & Noble or Amazon.

My one word 2013

I always make a list of resolutions for the New Year.  And I stick to them…. for about 2-3 weeks. Exercising & eating healthy, organizing & decluttering, creating a family budget… but by the end of January I’m eating a Whopper Jr & fries while shopping online and avoiding the stack of junk mail, catalogs, magazines, and bills that are piled on the kitchen counter.

This year is different. I am not making resolutions for 2013. Instead, I am choosing a one word theme that encompasses what I want to achieve and how I want to live during the next 12 months.  My one word is:

1flour·ish

verb \ˈflər-ish, ˈflə-rish\

Definition of FLOURISH

  1. to be in a vigorous state; thrive.
  2. to be in its or in one’s prime; be at the height of fame, excellence, influence, etc.
  3. to be successful; prosper.
  4. to grow luxuriantly, or thrive in growth, as a plant.

What is your one word for 2013?

{Scrumptious} Strawberry-Peach Sangria

I love living in our neighborhood. Most of our neighbors are also our friends and we get together often during the warm months. The perfect way to end a spring, summer, or fall day….neighbors, fire pit, and drinks. On Memorial Day weekend I made {Scrumptious} Strawberry – Peach Sangria to share around our fire. It was delicious. (however, fresh peaches would’ve been better)

Ingredients:

One bottle Riesling

1/2 pound strawberries

2 peaches (I used 1/2 a jar of sliced peaches in 100% juice because I already had them in the pantry)

1 kiwi fruit

3 cans of Sierra Mist

Preparation:

Slice the strawberries, peaches, and kiwi fruit. Pour bottle of wine into pitcher and add fruit. Chill in refrigerator for 4-6 hours. Add cans of Sierra Mist, gently stir, and serve.

ENJOY!

I love Concrete {Treasures} and Antique Sales

I am feeling a bit giddy this evening in anticipation of the annual Memorial Day Weekend SALE at Cross Creek Antiques (Simply Iowa) this weekend.  I plan to be there tomorrow morning at 8am when the sale starts. Barb finds the best antique treasures…and such a variety…truly something for everyone. The “teaser” photos on the Simply Iowa blog and Facebook page are more than enough to entice me to wake up, down a cup of coffee, grab my checkbook, and head to the sale.

I know I won’t be disappointed. I went to the Garden Party sale at the end of March and bought these two amazing treasures for our yard…. I fell in love with the concrete girl the moment I laid eyes on her.

My {darling} Concrete Garden Girl

Our {cheerful} Concrete Gnome

If you are in the area, I think you should check out the Cross Creek Antiques (Simply Iowa)  Memorial Day Weekend SALE… May 25th, 26th, 27th,  and 28th… 8 a.m. ’til Dusk each day…. 101 Williams Blvd. Fairfax, Iowa.

My baby is growing up.

As my friends come to terms with the fact that today was the last day of school for their high school seniors, I am sitting here wondering how my little girl has grown up so quickly. No, she isn’t graduating high school or even heading to high school in the fall. She is 2 yrs old. But as I uploaded photos from yesterday’s tumbling class (the last day for this school year), I realized how much she has changed and grown since last August. She hasn’t been a baby for a while and she isn’t even a toddler anymore. She is a little girl.

I can only imagine how difficult the last day of Harper’s high school career will be for me. (or even her first day of kindergarten for that matter) So for now, I will happily embrace her new independence….  “No mommy, I do it!”…… knowing that it generally ends with “HELP! pwease mommy” when she is unable to do the task on her own.  And I will cherish all the moments, days, weeks, months, and years until she walks across that stage to receive her diploma (in 2028). And just so she knows….even at that moment, she will still be my little girl.

Outdoor Enchantment – Pinterest Party

During the month of April I participated in a “party” with The DIY Club called Project Pinterest. The monthly theme was Outdoor Enchantment. It was fairly simple….I created my Pinterest board with their specified title – “Outdoor Enchantment with the DIY Club” and pinned anything that I loved that was outdoor related. I pinned outdoor dining tablescapes, flower container & gardening  ideas, outdoor activities for children & families, and more.

The cool part…. my board was one that The DIY Club featured at the end of the “party”. Here is the lovely outdoor dining tablescape pin that was featured. I would love to have lunch with my favorite girlfriends at this table!

But the coolest part… this theme definitely inspired and motivated me for spring/summer outdoor decorating, gardening, and fun!  Excited to play kick croquet with our kids….Making plant labels for my herbs out of wine corks….Planting beautiful flower containers….

Check out all of my pins on my “Outdoor Enchantment at The DIY Club” board. And if you feel compelled to let me know which pin was your favorite, I’d {LOVE} to read your comments.

Nicole

“Big girl” bedroom inspiration and the perfect {vintage} find

I am slowly but surely acquiring items to transform Harper’s bedroom from a minimally-decorated, pale pink and chocolate brown nursery to a  whimsical “big girl” room full of personality and charm with a vintage/shabby chic feel.

I had colors in mind….hot pink, light pink, soft lime, and aqua or turquoise. But I needed a visual. Gotta love Pinterest….found this fabulous color palette from The Inspired Bride.

I had decided on a solid color quilt with pattern/print pillows. But, I found this quilt at TJMaxx…fell in love with it… and decided to flip my design. Pictured with…turquoise and lime Ralph Lauren throw pillows (also from TJMaxx),  her one-year-old cake smash photo (photo by Kenzi Photography) in a 16×20 Mary Ann frame in dragonfruit from The Organic Bloom, and striped bicycle pillow.

The one thing that I definitely wanted her to have…. a vintage white iron bed frame. I have kept my eye out for one since she was born. I had almost given up hope and started talking myself into a reproduction. But….my fabulous mother came across one in a furniture resale shop this weekend and sent this photo via text.

Of course, I rushed right out to buy it….even though it won’t go into Harper’s bedroom for a few weeks. I will happily store it in the garage until after I paint and buy a twin mattress.

Now, I just need to buy paint…paint the room….buy a chandelier….paint our birdcage….order wall art….and put it all together. Check back for a post of her new bedroom in a few weeks. Until then, take a peak at the photos that have given me ideas and inspiration on my Harper’s “Big Girl” bedroom board on Pinterest.

xo,

Nicole
